minimalVNC is a native macOS client for RFB 3.8 servers. Most connection problems are one of the four below.

"Server only offers RFB 3.x"

The server speaks a protocol older than 3.8. minimalVNC requires RFB 3.8 — most modern servers (wayvnc, TigerVNC, TightVNC, x11vnc) support it; update the server or enable 3.8 in its configuration.

"TLS certificate is not trusted"

Self-signed certificates — normal for homelab servers — need "Allow untrusted TLS certificates" enabled on that favourite. Only enable it for servers you control.

"Authentication failed"

Set the username and password on the favourite (Edit… in the sidebar's context menu). Note that RealVNC's proprietary RSA-AES and RA2 schemes are not supported — use VeNCrypt or classic VNC authentication on the server instead.

Keyboard types wrong characters

By default your Mac layout wins: characters are sent as symbols, so QWERTZ on the Mac types QWERTZ even on a QWERTY server. If you prefer the server's layout to decide (physical key positions, QEMU extended key events), switch Session → Keyboard → "Send Physical Keys".

Session shortcuts

⇧⌘V types your Mac clipboard into the remote as keystrokes (for password prompts and consoles without clipboard support) · ⌘0 toggles 1:1 pixels / scale-to-fit · ⌘K disconnects · ⌃⌘F toggles full screen · ⌃⌘S sends ⌘ shortcuts to the remote as Super+key (in full screen this captures ⌘Tab too) · Left ⌥ acts as the remote Super key by default — the clean answer for tiling window managers: ⌥Space opens the remote launcher, ⌥1…9 switch workspaces, no macOS conflicts, and Right ⌥ stays AltGr for international layouts (change or disable under Session → Remote Super Key) · ⇧⌘Space sends a one-shot Super+Space · ⌃⌘ combos always stay on the Mac. In full screen, rest the pointer at the top edge for a moment to reveal the session controls.

Anything else

Use the contact form — include your macOS version, the server software, and what happened. Replies usually within a day or two.
